Rent a Boat on Lake Como: Prices, Options and How It Works

There are two ways to get on the water on Lake Como: rent a small self-drive boat and pilot it yourself, or rent a boat with a private skipper who drives while you enjoy the lake.

Self-drive rentals are small open boats with modest engines, rented by the hour from lakefront kiosks. They are fun for a quick spin, but you stay in charge: navigation rules, other traffic, wakes, moorings and the afternoon breeze are all your problem, and the lake gets busy in summer.

A skippered rental flips the experience. A local captain handles the boat while you sit back with a glass of prosecco, swim from the stern, and actually look at what you came to see. Two details make Lake Como pricing easy to misread. First, serious operators price per boat, not per person: EUR 550 split between six friends is about EUR 92 each, less than many shared group tours. Second, the price you see should already include the skipper and fuel for the itinerary. When you compare quotes, always check both points.

Booking online with us takes a 30% deposit by card or Apple Pay; the balance is settled on the day of the cruise.

Italy lets you drive a rental boat without any license as long as the engine stays at or below 40 horsepower. That is why the lakefront kiosks all advertise "no license needed": their boats sit exactly at that limit.

Anything more powerful, including a proper cabin cruiser like ours, legally requires an Italian boating license, which visitors do not have. The practical consequence is simple: on Lake Como, the comfortable boats come with a skipper.

In practice the skipper is the best part of the deal. Your captain knows where the water is calm when the breva wind picks up in the afternoon, which villa is best photographed at which hour, where to anchor for a quiet swim, and which restaurants have a private dock for lunch. And since nobody on board is driving, everyone gets to enjoy the prosecco.

From the Como branch of the lake, one relaxed loop covers the greatest hits: George Clooney's Villa Oleandra in Laglio, the film-famous Villa del Balbianello on its wooded peninsula, Villa Carlotta's botanical gardens in Tremezzo, and Bellagio, the "pearl of the lake", at the point where the three branches meet.

With more hours you can push north to pastel-colored Varenna, anchor for a swim in a quiet cove near Lezzeno, or time the return so the mountains turn gold around you. With a full day, add lunch at a waterfront crotto with its own dock, reachable only comfortably by boat.
